The New Names of Jerusalem in the Books of Isaiah and Jeremia

Introduction

Renaming or giving a new name had very important social significance not only in the Israelite culture, but also in the whole tradition of the Ancient East. There are many examples of renaming of cities or places in the Bible. Some of them are connected with the important religious events which have taken place there, for instance the changing of the city’s name Luz into Betel by Jacob after the vision of God (Gen. 35: 6-7).
